Day 5 – From Famine to Steak

Day 5

We were up a little earlier this morning and headed out after another great breakfast. The weather was lovely. Our plan was to leave Gleneely around 12 after visiting the Famine Museum but once we got there we knew the day would change as we didn’t want to leave.

It was amazing, we first went into the shop to buy our tickets for the tour and had a little walk round. The gift shop was so lovely. Martin, our tour guide was the owner and his family had lived there for many years. He was very interesting and spoke about Ireland especially Donegal in the earlier years, before the famine. The houses were done up very well and he had pictures of his own family everywhere. He told stories about Irish wakes, the traditions. Then Martin passed on the tour to a younger member of staff who spoke about the famine. She was very good, but her voice was very high pitched.

After she finished we went for a walk around the rest of the museum. It’s done very well and the way the troubles in Northern Ireland were explained was brilliant. I loved the safe houses, they were so good.

We were there a good while and after popped into the coffee shop which had the best views of Doah beach and toasted cheese sandwiches.

Back to Canny Mansion and we packed up for the next part of our trip. Mum swears she seen a tear in Liam’s eye when we were leaving. Ha-ha!

Off to Portnoo. Friends of Granny & Grandad’s come from there and Mum had said she would call in if they could. Again, we were so lucky with the weather that we went for it. As we arrived in Portnoo, Grandad had sent the address and we found it straight away. So, we parked up and walked round to their beautiful house which is B&B.

Michael answered the door and welcomed us in, he chatted away and then seen the boys looking at his Alexa (Amazon). He started to tell the story how he had a friend in London who had sent it over as a gift. We all started laughing, poor Michael didn’t have a clue who we were. Thank goodness Mary arrived shortly after and remembered us. We had a lovely time with them and they told us a great spot for pictures. Off we went and found the spot, it was incredible.

On the way back down Dad popped into a local shop to see if they had a connection for the BBQ. They didn’t but he said they had a lovely butcher’s in there. Out went Mum. Five minutes later she had 5 burgers and a steak for herself. Our van came equipped with a BBQ so we decided we were having a BBQ no matter what. Funny enough, it also had a post office so she got the WAW passport stamped too!!

We headed to Killybegs, mum phoned the campsite and we were booked in. Dad got coal, we were all set. The town itself is amazing and the fishing boats are massive.

We headed down to the campsite and the guy met us at the gate, he was so nice. The evening was so warm and the sky was very clear. We set up camp and Mum got the fairy lights out. Dad, Tom & Harry went down to the pebble beach and we made dinner.

Mum had to admit the burgers were to die for but said her steak was brilliant too, still not sure how she got away with getting 1 steak for herself.

An early night was had by all but not before we finished it off with roasting marshmallows on our dying BBQ.

Oscar tonight was a weak one, we had such a brilliant day. We just gave it to Dad, I’m sure there was a reason for it!!
