Day 12 – Westport House & Mussels

Day 12

By the time we had packed the van up and got ourselves ready for the next stage of adventure we were about 2 hours behind. Margaret, Granny’s friend had organised for us to go to Westport House and we were staying at the campsite there, our second campsite. We said our goodbyes to PJ & Eileen, it felt a little sad, we’d had such a good time, Mum said her best time there. We stopped at Develeash bridge for a final picture.

Westport is the town Dad says he would move to in a heartbeat. It’s a lovely town with loads going on. We headed to the campsite, parked up we went into the grounds, Dad decided he needed to change into his shorts, the sun was shining. Mum seen a bar so we went over and they had a pizza firepit. We ordered a large margarita and 2 Coors lights. By the time he’d come back the pizza had arrived and when he seen the beer another smile came out, us kids aren’t used of that 2 days in a row but we knew it would be a good day.

Mum & Dad tell this story about when it was their wedding, a couple of days before, they went out for a drink with Aunty Alison & Uncle Joe. They had visited a few Russell cousins along the way and were heading back through Westport House when suddenly Mum seen these swans and shouted ‘look at the size of those swans, they’re massive’ turned out they were boats on the lake shaped as swans, too much Pinot me thinks!!

Anyway, Mum said we had to go on them in memory of that great night, so off we went. Dad & Tom were pedalling, Harry steering, Mum and me sitting back and enjoying it all.

Next was the waterslide. I went on with Dad, the others watched, we got so wet but it was very funny. Then it was Mum and the boys turn. Mum absolutely hates rides but because it was a small one and she’d watch us she went for it. Whatever happened Harry came back with blood pouring out of his mouth and another tooth down. After a clear up and a walk round we decided to go into Westport town. We headed straight to Matt Molloy’s. It’s a pub with traditional music and its always busy, it was far too busy today, we headed for the West pub. As we went in someone had just got a pot of Mussels, we were all drooling so a portion was ordered with chips. We didn’t want much as we were heading out to Margaret’s for dinner.

They were the most delicious mussels I have every had and Mum & Dad barely got a look in. After we walked round a got our taxi to Margaret, who just lives outside the main town.

We had a lovely evening, Granny & Grandad were there and Margaret’s brother Willie, called over with loads of photos from when he lived in London and they all went out together. The food was amazing, mum and Granny said Margaret was a great cook and they weren’t wrong. The table done as if it was Christmas day, candles and napkins, the wine was following too. At around 11pm we called a taxi and headed back to our ‘home’.
