Day 13
We were all up early as we wanted to make the most of the sunshine. Mum and Dad had bought sausages, bacon, eggs, the works and we decided we’d drive up to the Reek and have breakfast there. Unfortunately, everywhere we trying to park we have height restrictions 2.1 metres our home is 3metres something. Mum had seen a spot earlier up the road and we went back. Found the spot, gas on and made the nicest breakfast.
Granny & Grandad called to say they were on their way and we met them back at the Reek where we had found a parking spot just outside. I jumped into the car with them and we were off to Louisburgh and Connermara.
I was glad to get away from the boys for a while. Grandad was stopping everywhere for picture opportunities now and Dad had no choice but to do the same. Granny said she thought she’d seen steam coming out of Dad’s ears at one point!!
The trip had now been renamed the TBW – Tom Beisty Way!!
The night before Margaret’s husband had suggested that we take a road that would show the best views in all of Mayo. He wasn’t wrong. The roads were tight but the area was fantastic, even Grandad said he’d not seen these parts before. Mum had spoken before about a time when heading back from a wedding Grandad rolled down the window and put it arm out to indicated that we were all to stop for light refreshments, he did it again today and you could see mum clapping and laughing, the joy was there for all to see. The town was called Lenane. We went into a lovely pub with a great fire and ordered food, surprisingly Dad ordered chowder, his 3rd so far on the trip.
Off we went again, lots more views, lots more winding roads and a hell of a lot of rocks! Rocks, rocks and more rocks. Every bend more breath taking but after a good while of driving and jumping in and out for Grandad to take a photo, we all got a little tired so at the bottom of Maam Cross we found a hotel. We were going to stop for a drink anyway but mum asked about a room for Granny & Grandad and they checked in. We ordered a platter of sandwiches and chips for us, everyone was happy. Dad said the pint never hit the sides, Grandad said the same.
You’ll never guess what was playing on the telly ‘The Quiet Man’. We sat and relaxed after what had been a fantastic day. Mum & Dad parked up in the carpark out the back and everyone headed for bed. I was very lucky, there was a spare bed in Granny’s room and it felt like I was staying at the best hotel in the world when I climbed into the bed.
