Day 6 – Donegal Town and Old Friends

Day 6

At 4:30am we woke to the noise of horrendous rain beating down on our van. It was so loud and with the wind rocking the van too, we were certainly awake. At around 6:30 Harry announced he had lost a tooth in the night and that he put it under his pillow but it was still there. The tooth fairy was rubbish but the tooth fairy didn’t know and after the night they’d had didn’t really care.

Off we went to Donegal Town. Mum has a friend that she used to work with 15 years ago, they had lost touch but through the powers of FB had been in contact with each other over the past number of years. We parked up and went into The Abbey Hotel. It was lovely, tea ordered and in came Lisa. The two never stopped talking, catching up, gossiping. Tom asked for a tour of the hotel, mum wanted to kill him. We walked around the town and it was decided to head for Enniscrone.

After what felt like a life time we were in Enniscrone. Listening to Mum tell stories of her childhood and the ‘we never had a bad day’. She told this story about Geraldine as a small child running around naked on the beach asking everyone had they seen her ‘Willie’. It was so funny.

The boys had a quick go on the go carts and then we headed for the Big Yoke.

The Big Yoke is a Boeing 767 which is part of a transport inspired glamping site. It looked brilliant, he also had a train and taxi. I had chosen lunch and the first thing that came to mind was Supermac’s, so Mum looked up the nearest on google and off we went.

Then off we headed to Mayo, mum in her sneaky world had the idea of heading to Belmullet for the fair day, which Dad was trying to avoid at all costs but Mum had the directions and sent us that way. Winking at me thinking she was clever. Unfortunately, when the google came out again we had missed it by a day. So Mulranny and Achill Island were our new destination.

It was beautiful, but Dad had done over 200 miles and in his words, enough was enough. To be honest, I think it was more he wanted a cold beer. Back on the road and it wasn’t long before we were in Kiltimagh and Grandad’s town. We were starving so we stopped for a Pizza at Luca’s. Dad couldn’t get over the price of it, 1 extra-large pizza, 1 large pizza, 1 portion of chips and 5 drinks, 25 EURO’s. You’d have heard him in London laughing!!

We were finally in Develeash, Grandad’s home village.

Our whole WAW holiday was decided on when we went to Ireland last July and spent a weekend in Kiltimagh at the Beisty Gathering when 166 Beisty’s gathered to celebrate our family. We had a fantastic time and I met so many cousins from around the world. I’m still in contact with a few of them and it’s great to catch up.

We parked up, PJ & Eileen had left a key out for us as they were in Westport at a concert but the house was so lovely and warm. We were very happy, Dad had his beer, Mum opened a bottle of prescecco and we all had a great stretch, then off to sleep.

And the Oscar went to……..the tight fella at the pizza restaurant, he really didn’t stop smiling.
